Reading for the Future

What gives me hope for the future of American Education is the way that teaching literature has changed. When I was little, we read from a textbook and answered questions about it. There was no choice-- it was that, and that's it! Maybe that is why I don't particularly enjoy reading today.

In my son's classroom, though, it is much different. In his 3rd grade class, choice is always available to them. They can choose what they'd like to read as long as it is on their level. This has instilled a love of reading in my child. When the book is on a topic that is of interest to the child, of course they are going to have fun reading it! They also are learning in the process.

This teacher conducts book clubs for each book that they read. The children feel as though they are like the adults who have book clubs. This is just one more piece of motivation the children have in order to love reading. How inspirational!

This post is part of the MAT@USC Hope for the holidays event. Did you experience or witness something in 2009 that gave you hope for the future of American education? If so, please see this post for more information on how to share it.
